The word used for MINISTRY in Ephesians 4.12 in the original greek bible is,διακονια. The word ministry has its origins in the same root from which the word MINISTERS originates. The word for MINISTERS in the original greek bible is διακονος. The english transliteration is diakonos.

Paul writes, Who then is Paul, who is Apollos, but διακονος (ministers). Applying the above information to Ephesians 4:11,12 the logical conclusion is that the work of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers within the local church is to perfect the saints (perfect the disciples) for διακονια (the ministry)--to train the saints to fulfill the tasks they themselves play out in the local assembly.
